Police suspected Ignatow from the start and when Ignatow's ex-girlfriend, Mary Ann Shore confesses that she witnessed Ignatow torturing and murdering Brenda, investigators believe they have enough evidence to put him away for life. However, Mary Ann Shore does not make a good witness and unbelievably, the jury finds Mel Ignatow innocent of the murder. One year later, a package is found hidden in Ignatow's former home. It contains film that documents the atrocities Mel Ignatow committed on Brenda Schafer. But Ignatow has been acquitted, and under the Double Jeopardy clause cannot be retried a second time.
