Story & Infos

On the night of August 12 to 13, 1961, the Iron Curtain closed in the heart of Berlin. From that moment on, East and West Berliners were separated by barbed wire and concrete walls. While they had bid farewell to friends and family just a day earlier, they awoke the next morning to a grim new reality. Many did not yet realize that they would not see their loved ones on the other side of the wall for a very long time.
What was a dark day for many Berliners was a moment of triumph for the builders of the wall—at last, the final escape route for so-called “Republic fugitives” had been sealed.
Filmmakers Florian Huber and Sigrund Laste interviewed eyewitnesses who experienced the construction of the Berlin Wall firsthand for their documentary. The film also explores the different perspectives people associate with the wall and its impact on their lives.
