Sisi

“Sisi” takes a new look at the life of a young woman who made history as an empress and became a legend as a film character. It tells the love story of two young people caught between personal desire and political constraints, between power and vulnerability. On the one hand, Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, known as Sisi, who was known as the “most beautiful woman in Europe”, defied rigid courtly conventions and knew how to use the power of her outward appearance for herself and her ideals. On the other side was Franz Joseph I, who transferred the burden of the crown into personal and political toughness and found an unusual ally in Sisi.

Season 1: 2021, episodes 1-6

Wild child, child of nature, duchess: that is Duchess Elisabeth in Bavaria, known as Sisi (Dominique Devenport), and she is newly in love. However, her mother Ludovika (Julia Stemberger) quickly puts an end to her daughter’s crush on a count who is not befitting of her status, as her sister Néné (Pauline Rénevier) is to marry Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria (Jannik Schümann). Sisi reluctantly travels to Bad Ischl, where the engagement is to be made official. But even at their first meeting, an undeniable bond develops between Sisi and Franz…

Season 2: 2022, episodes 7-12

The birth of their son was supposed to make the happiness of the imperial couple Sisi and Franz perfect. Instead, it is the impetus for power struggles in Europe: Bismarck threatens to drive Austria into a new war. Sisi tries with all her might to be there for her husband and her people. But her life remains that of a bird in a golden cage.

When she travels to Hungary on a political mission, she manages to rediscover the light-heartedness of her childhood. There she encounters a world that makes her blossom anew: The untamed, endless expanses of the Hungarian Puszta, the hard, simple life of the people and, in Count Andrassy, a man with whom you can steal horses. When Sisi ends up in captivity with him, of all people, she has to ask herself how long she can stand firm…
